My sons spent all day converting a standard V8 LEGO car to electric drive. Usually they just fight all day so I thought they’ll start fighting soon.
They called the car components names from bicycle parts. So the chassis was referred to as the frame, the axles they called bars. As I looked at them, I felt as if I was in an R&D department of some car producer.
They started by removing the ‘petrol’ engine and figuring out how to connect the motor to the wheels and the chassis.
They wanted to avoid taking the front axle apart by twisting some parts and pulling others out with their teeth! But eventually they had to take it apart completely. Positioning the electric motor and securing it to the chassis did not take long.
Putting the front axle back proved to be a challenge as no one remembered how the components were put together in the first place. Naty worked on this while Sam was working on the bonnet.
Than they argued about where to put the battery, which led to major design changes to the outline…
Finally they connected the lights and an independent forward / reverse handle and the car was ready! Ronja and Adam tested it throughly.
They were playing with LEGO and learning about cars, but even more important the two brothers learned and practiced other things, such as working together on a project, dealing with problems, and following a procedure.
But most importantly, they had fun and they did not, not even once, fight! Thank you LEGO!
